A quick taxonomy of signal categories

Before the plays, the categories. A "signal" is any externally observable change in a buying account or a person inside it that increases the odds they will buy something like what you sell in a defined window. Signals are neither leads nor intent in the Bombora/6sense sense; they're triggers.

1. Champion signals — events tied to a specific person who already knows your product (or knows the category). Pitfalls to avoid

Stale signals. A funding round announced 90 days ago is no longer a signal — it's history. Most signal sources have a useful window of 7-30 days from event to outreach. Past that, the rest of the market has already reached out and the prospect is fatigued. Build a freshness filter into the signal pipeline; drop signals older than 30 days from the queue automatically.

Over-personalization that creeps. There is a line between "I noticed you spoke at SaaStr" (legitimate research) and "I noticed you posted a photo of your dog on Saturday" (creepy and counterproductive). Stay on the professional side of that line. As a rule of thumb: would your message survive being read aloud at a conference panel about AI outbound ethics? If not, edit.

Signal-stacking. When five signals fire on the same prospect (job change and their company's funding and an open req and a stack change and a community engagement), the temptation is to mention all five. Resist. Pick the strongest one, lead with it, and use the others only if the first thread doesn't catch. Mentioning all five looks like surveillance, not sales.

GDPR / data-protection compliance. All 12 plays involve processing personal data of EU residents (and increasingly of US residents under state laws like CCPA/CPRA). Under GDPR, B2B outbound based on legitimate-interest typically requires: (a) a documented Legitimate Interest Assessment, (b) clear opt-out at first message, (c) data minimization in the enrichment layer, (d) a public privacy notice covering signal-based processing. The plays above are structurally GDPR-compatible but operationally require this layer. Don't skip it.

The AI Act overlay. Are these signals public-record / legal to use?

Using public information for B2B outreach is legal in most jurisdictions, but processing it into structured records about identifiable individuals brings GDPR (EU/UK), CCPA/CPRA (California), and a growing patchwork of US state laws into scope. Document your legal basis (legitimate interest is the standard B2B framing under GDPR), provide opt-out, and stay clear of special-category data.

Can signal-based selling be GDPR-compliant?

Yes, but not by default. The minimum: a documented Legitimate Interest Assessment per processing purpose, prospect-facing privacy notice covering enrichment and signal-based processing, opt-out in every message, and data minimization in the enrichment layer (don't pull what you don't need). Don't, at the message level — the math doesn't work and the answers will mislead.
